Death On An Island by Eliza Reid
The prologue to this twisty, atmospheric mystery sets the stage of what’s to come. The story takes place in the Westman Islands just off the south coast of Iceland.
Kristján, the mayor, discovers a dead body in the town’s folklore museum. Sometimes death doesn’t come easy, even when it’s natural causes.
Time moves forward. A group of international players have gathered together for a diplomatic dinner hosted by the mayor the night before the grand opening of a new art exhibit at the museum.
But uneasiness moves among the group when they realize an impending storm has trapped them together. A storm so vicious that the highly anticipated art exhibit opening will have to be delayed until the weather clears.
The author, Eliza Reid, slowly and intricately, gives reader’s an in-depth view to the psyches and personalities of each of the characters.
Hannah was a scientist turned artist. She’s a rising star, a big draw for tourists and VIPs. Thor, is a high-profile businessman with his staunch wife, Linda, perched by his side. Thor is the largest employer on the island and looking to expand his facilities. Hannah finds him repulsive.
Graeme, the Canadian Ambassador, is putting his best foot forward to impress Thor. Jane is Graeme’s loyal and steadfast wife. She’s used to these diplomatic dinners, but they can get rather dull.
Kavita is the deputy at the Canadian embassy. She and Graeme, the Canadian Ambassador, are not exactly hitting it off. Tempers flair and soon their private fight becomes pubic.
Famed author, Ben, is Jane’s long-time friend. She’s invited him on the trip to help break up the monotony since her husband will be tied up for most of the trip, pushing a business proposition.
We find Jane carefully studying and analyzing everyone attending the dinner, a habit she developed out of boredom. When one of the dinner guests meets a grisly fate during cocktails, she turns to her sleuthing skills to not only pass away the time, but to clear her husband, who has clearly become a murder suspect.
Jane quietly flushes out well-guarded secrets and scandalous affairs. She realizes no one in their group is safe – and one is a killer with a well-planned nefarious agenda. They are trapped. No one can get off or on the island until the storm is over.
This locked-room mystery is sure to tantalize readers. It’s like an intricate connect the dots puzzle, as you try to tie everything together – including the motive and murder. Who is deceiving who? Who will stop at nothing to make sure their end-goal is met? And exactly who is so cold and callous that they eliminate anyone jeopardizing their agenda?
