Shot Through The Book by Eva Gates

Lucy McNeil is a librarian at the Brodie Island Lighthouse at the Outer Banks. She’s also got a reputation for being the local crime solving sleuth (and a good one at that!). But she’s sworn off getting involved in local crimes – or so she thought.

It’s July, summer’s prime-time. Lucy and her quaint town are planning their Young Adult Authors Festival. Bestselling author, Todd Harrison, is the headliner. Two other local authors, will also be a big draw (but not as big as Todd).

The last thing Lucy expects right before the festival kicks off, is to find one of the author’s knocking at her door late one night. The author has heard about Lucy’s solid sleuthing skills. He’s got something he wants to chat with her about. But when she goes to the kitchen to fetch some lemonade, she comes back to find the author dead on her deck! So much for staying “uninvolved” in the local crime scene!

Even worse, Connor, Lucy’s husband, isn’t pleased when he comes home to find the police swarming their home – even less pleased to discover that a murder has been committed! And immediately after the body is taken away, even more chaos ensues for Lucy and Connor.

Seems the victim had a teenage cult following – a large following. And these fans don’t think twice about continuously honoring their favorite deceased author with flowers, candles, gifts, etc. at the crime scene! Suddenly Lucy and Connor find themselves constantly fending off unannounced and uninvited teens all hours of the day and night!

In Shot Through the Book, the characters are well-defined and there’s no shortage of motives or suspects to mingle with a solid murder plot:

Apparently the deceased author was working on something groundbreaking and original for his next book. He was also accused of stealing another author’s ideas and stringing along his disgruntled agent.

And then there’s the widow: what a piece of work! She’s slinging accusations around that one of the local women was having an affair with her hubby – but she’s not all that broken up that he’s dead! And why would the widow have her own annoying photographer and a personal assistant in tow? Looks like she’s got her own agenda – and whatever it is, it’s hacking off everyone she comes in contact with!

The two other headlining authors that are left are jealous and spiteful enemies. Could one or both of them have wanted the festival lime-light bad enough permanently get rid of the competition?

All these questions and scenarios weigh heavily on Lucy. Even Connor realizes there’s simply no way Lucy is staying out of this one! Both of them not only put on their best sleuthing caps, but take on the flock of obsessed, overzealous teens – and that’s a guarantee to keep you smiling and maybe even LOL!

Shot Through the Book by Eva Gates is a sunny, beachy summer cozy – absolutely perfect to while away a lovely summer day on a comfy lounge chair with your iced tea or lemonade in hand.
