EZ Recipes: Cocktail Sauce, Sandwich Spreads & More!
Fresh horseradish (not to be confused with “horseradish sauce”), can be found conveniently jarred in the cold deli section of most grocery stores. Alas, no one seems to ever mention horseradish, yet just a tiny bit of horseradish can add a kick to many recipes.
In fact, if you keep a small bottle of fresh horseradish in your fridge, you’ll be able to whip up fresh home-made cocktail sauce and sandwich spreads in minutes. The recipes below are Free-Style Recipes, meaning, you take the basic recipe and increase or decrease ingredients to your own personal taste.
COCKTAIL SAUCE
1/3 cup of ketchup
1 teaspoon of Worcester sauce
1 teaspoon of fresh horseradish
a squeeze or two of fresh lemon
black pepper to taste
optional: A few dashes of Old Bay style seasoning
Mix the above ingredients together and chill for at least an hour or more to let the ingredients blend together. Want more of a kick? Add more fresh horseradish. Love the zing of an Old Bay style seasoning? Add more.
SANDWICH SPREAD:
1/3 cup of your favorite mayo
1-1/2 teaspoons of fresh horseradish
a squeeze of lemon
black pepper to taste
Mix the above ingredients and chill for at least an hour to let ingredients blend together. Spread on your favorite sandwiches such as roast beef or turkey.
OR: Try mixing your favorite mayo, BBQ sauce and a dash or two of horseradish (enjoy on hot sandwiches such as roast beef or turkey)
BACON-HORSERADISH DIP
½ cup of sour cream
1 teaspoon (or more) of fresh horseradish
2 slices of finely crumbled crispy cooked bacon
black pepper to taste
a squeeze of fresh lemon
Optional: a tablespoon of finely chopped onion
Mid the above ingredients and chill for at least an hour to let ingredients blend together. Add extra horseradish for a more intense dip – your choice! Great on sturdy potato chips or crackers.
Other uses for fresh horseradish:
– Add a dash or two to a bloody Mary.
– Add a teaspoon (or more to your personal taste) to your favorite basic deviled egg recipe.
The great thing about these recipes is that you don’t need a lot of ingredients plus they are easy to make in minutes. Keep the ingredients on hand for those unexpected guests or just for yourself.
In these times of high food prices, you may find it cheaper to make your own sauces and dips when you need them and these recipes won’t have a lot of extra additives/preservatives in them like you find in some pre-made sauces and spreads.
