Opportunity: Own It!
We all want opportunity beating down our door. But what if opportunity not only isn’t beating down your door, but isn’t even in your neighborhood?
Sometimes it may feel like opportunity took a vacation and forgot to take you along! When that happens it’s easy to get complacent or downright depressed when life’s problems become so overwhelming that you just want to give up. Maybe it’s a job you got passed over for, maybe you’re lonely, maybe you’re in a financial or medical crisis, experienced a death in the family, etc. A lot can happen in our life-time to take us UP and take us DOWN.
Sinatra said it best in his 1963 hit “That’s Life.” His claim of each time he falls flat on his face, he picks himself up and gets right back in the race — words to live by. So, when things aren’t exactly going your way and opportunity is nowhere to be found, take matters into your own hands and track that sucker down!
Opportunity is lurking everywhere – if you are feeling lonely, reach out to your local church or senior center. Volunteer to be a companion in a nursing home or animal shelter – or other places that need volunteers. These places present opportunities to make new friends and is your chance to really make a positive difference.
Think about your interests, then check locally for a book club, wine club, art group, sailing club, walking group or knitting club, etc. Seniors should check out AARP. They provide helpful seminars and sometimes events, plus many other benefits. Can’t find a group but know folks with similar interests? Then maybe you take the bull by the horns and start your own group! If you have a lot of close-knit neighbors or friends, maybe a group of you takes turns once a month hosting a potluck dinner, lunch or cocktails — hey pinochle, canasta or poker anyone?
Do you have a business that you feel lacks motivation on your part, and you want to improve it? Check to see if you have a small business association that you can join or talk to your local Chamber of Commerce.
If you’re lucky enough to have opportunity beating on your door – by all means, let him in! If not, make it your personal search and siege mission to find opportunity and drag him through your front door!
