Easy Ideas For a Better 2026

Take a deep breath – EXHALE – it’s a brand new year! Will it be better than 2025 or worse? Who knows? But here’s the thing, doing some easy, little things NOW as the new year begins, may help it go smoother!

Perhaps you’re doing some of these easy ideas already – great! But maybe you’ll find a few of them you never thought about. It’s a clean slate for 2026 – and speaking of cleaning:

– STREAMLINE: It may be easier than you think! Donating clothes and other goods to places in need is always a win-win – for them and for you! The kitchen is a good place to start – lids without the pots and pans to go with them – OUT! Expired food (probably more than you realize especially with spices) – OUT! Too many books – DONATE! Too much unworn clothing – DONATE! Too much of anything??? Thin it out! Donate what you can, toss what you can’t! No regrets!

– PARK FURTHER AWAY WHEN GOING TO STORES: If you want to get more exercise why are you circling the parking lot trying to find a space close to the door? Parking further away forces you to do some extra walking and burn off calories. Also, it ‘s a nice gesture to leave the close spaces for those folks who have trouble walking or are handicapped.

– TAKE TIME TO ENJOY THE LITTLE THINGS: Yes, sometimes the best things in life really are free – or close to it! A stroll in a park any time of year. Reading a good book can be your private escape (check out our Book categories for book reviews and recommendations). Try just chilling and listening to your favorite music, perhaps with a sip of wine or cup of coffee in hand.

READ FOOD LABELS: Foods that you may have been eating for years may suddenly contain additives you don’t want to ingest! Once you start reading labels, you’ll learn a lot about what’s “really” going into your food. Once you look up some of the ingredients, you may cross some items off your grocery list. Ultimately you’ll be eating healthier – and who doesn’t want that?

– GET A YEARLY ROUTINE EXAM: It’s always a good idea to have a general practitioner check you over at least once a year. Blood pressure issues or vitamin deficiencies that can make you sluggish or sick, can be caught by basic tests. Even more serious issues can be diagnosed and treated.

– CLEAN OUT THE CAR: What better way to start the new year than by zipping around in a “clean” car. Do it yourself or consider taking it somewhere to have it washed, waxed and detailed. Yes, it may be expensive, but that wax job will help protect your car’s paint from the harsh elements and will give your car a face lift!

– PRICE SHOP: It’s a whole new world and a whole new economy since covid. Gone are the days when you could go to your favorite grocery store to get the best deals and be “done.” Stores are more competitive than ever and almost all of them have weekly sales. Buying “store brands” can also be a big saver. Once you get used to “working” the various stores sale system and learning which stores have the best prices, you’ll start to see the difference in your monthly budget.

– DINING OUT:  Dining out these days can be very expensive.  If you work from home or are retired, consider going out to “lunch” rather than “dinner.”  Depending on the restaurant, lunch can be substantially cheaper.  Places like Olive Garden and Long Horn Steak House in our area offer lunch deals Monday through Friday.  I might add that their food has been quite fresh and fabulous!  Every restaurant is different, so check your area restaurants to see which ones offer a lunch menu.

– TAKE A BREAK FROM SOCIAL MEDIA AND THE NEWS! Let’s face it, social media and the news can be very negative and sometimes downright depressing – too much can affect your own attitude. Sometimes you need to just step away for a while.

– GOT EXTRA TIME? Consider volunteering. So many places including animals shelters are usually looking for outside help. It’s a great way to meet new people and do “good” at the same time.

– TAKE TIME FOR YOURSELF: Running around like a crazy person ? So busy you can’t think straight? STOP! It’s the new year and YOUR turn to do something nice for yourself. Decompress “your way.” Manicure? Spa treatment? Weekend getaway to the beach or mountains? A shopping spree all about “you?” Whatever floats your boat, do something truly nice for yourself!

– COUNT YOUR BLESSINGS: Be thankful for friends and family. Be thankful for the roof over your head, the food on your table. Be thankful for this very day. Say a prayer of thanks for blessings in your past, present and blessings coming in the future.

Sometimes little things make a big difference. Happy new year 2026!
