Silvercrest, Colorado is heading into the new year by kicking off the town’s Gala Week. It’s a glamorous event featuring TV celebrity, Whitney Wilton, star of the hit crime show, Chasers. Whitney grew up in Silvercrest and she’s the gala’s guest of honor.
But superstar Whitney didn’t come alone. She’s brought her show’s co-hosts, film crew, assistants and Lyra (her caterer and sister). This particular annual Gala Week is the most star-studded event yet, guaranteed to rock the town.
The head of gala committee is the uppity and demanding Tabitha Baxter. Tabitha’s bullying personality grates on many of the locals, but one thing they all seem to agree on, Tabitha sure knows how to raise the big bucks during Gala Week to help support the Silvercrest community.
Emma Starrs is an event planner and also runs the local Starlit Bookshop. Her shop is hosting some of the gala’s activities that lead up to the gala’s grand finale. She’s excited to be part of the gala events and the exposure is sure to not only help the community financially, but also her bookshop.
But as Gala Week begins, things aren’t going too smoothly for Tabitha. Accidents among Whitney’s staff leading up to the big closing event, start raising eyebrows. Then a dead body is found in a freezer! Yikes! What starts off as gala sabotage is now is straight up murder!
There’s a flurry of motives. Emma wonders if the murder is connected to the theft of the gala’s silent auction antiques. Perhaps bitter feuds between family members led to the crime. But with crew members filled with animosity, a shady professor and a missing manuscript, there’s plenty to speculate about!
And it gets worse! Emma and Tabitha have a long history of total disdain for one another. But even Emma is starting to feel bad for Tabitha. Suddenly, before she knows what hit her, she’s roped in by Tabitha to take on the role of event planner to fix the massive problems plaguing the gala – and that includes sniffing out a cold-hearted murderer who had the audacity to strike again!
In The Event of Murder is the second entry in Cynthia Kuhn’s Starlit Bookshop Mystery series. There’s just something about this series with its interesting plots, quirky characters, vicious villains and quaint home-town setting that just makes it so doggone good!
