Book It!
There’s NOTHING like a good book – and these days we have plenty of ways to enjoy them (i.e., online, audio or old-school physical books). I have to admit, I still get excited when I discover a “real” bookstore with books that I can feel, touch and take home. There’s just something “special” about getting lost in a new or used bookstore and whiling away a lazy afternoon. Losing oneself in a bookstore can be very relaxing and calming.
It doesn’t matter if you’re too busy to travel – or home-bound and can’t travel. In these tough economic times, maybe traveling just isn’t in your budget. But a book can take you “anywhere” and at minimal cost – sometimes even for free.
If you’re going through rough times or even just plain bored, books can help you start a new hobby, learn a new skill or even change your attitude for the better. Books on history, other cultures, including our own “pop” culture, can be fascinating. If you’re not able visit other parts of our great United States, Europe or even outer space, a good book can take you there!
Cozy mysteries for armchair sleuths are exactly that – “cozy.” They are subtle mysteries without excessive or over-the-top graphic violence (think Sherlock Holmes, Miss Marple, etc.). For those who want a roller coaster ride of suspense, there’s no shortage of thrillers that fit the bill! Science fiction, romance, music, biographies, etc…..there are plenty of categories to choose from!
There are books on religion to help you keep your faith strong. For many, the Bible can bring comfort and hope. Prayer books featuring a prayer for every day of the year, can also help you start your day off right or end your day on a positive note. Never overlook the power of prayer and books on prayers and religion can help you to stay focused.
A good book can make you happy, take you places without leaving your home and teach you something new. Books are the perfect escape!
Many thrift stores carry books at rock bottom prices. You can also check out books from your local library for free. Shop various online retailers for “sales” and “clearance.” Older books generally are much cheaper than new releases. Make a note of new releases you want to read and wait a few months to see if the books go on sale.
Do you belong to a church or senior center? Consider starting a book exchange program or donating your used books to a place that really needs them – think assisted living, friends and/or neighbors that may be stuck at home.
Have a friend that loves to read too? Take some time to meet them for a cup of coffee, talk about the books you are both reading and maybe even exchange books. Books and coffee go hand-in-hand!
BOOK IT! Summer is the perfect time to grab some good books, a cold glass of lemonade, a comfy lounge chair and get reading! Expand your horizons or let a book whisk you to another place, another time – or even a crime scene (if mysteries are your thing). Never underestimate the power of a good book!
