EZ Groovy Grilled Cheese Recipes

Let’s talk about the chill of fall and the bite of winter. Let’s talk about “comfort food!” And what could be more comforting on a chilly day than a bowl of soup and a grilled cheese sandwich! Those old-school commercials had it right – showing moms everywhere that there was no better lunch than tomato soup and a grilled cheese sandwich!

Wonder Women Sixty gave you some basic easy, free-styling soup and chowder recipes (see other posts in the FOOD Category). Now we’re giving you some ways to “elevate” your grilled cheese sandwich.

Most of us have been making grilled cheese sandwiches for years. Instead of your basic grilled cheese sandwich – i.e., 2 pieces of bread with cheese slapped in the middle, free-styling your grilled cheese sandwich with extra ingredients can really give it a “wow factor!” Add ingredients or subtract ingredients to your own personal liking. Come up with your own creations! Below are just some ideas to get your started.

THE BREAD: Gotta start with good bread. White is fine, but with all the other choices out there, why not try something different: pumpernickel, sourdough, Texas Toast, marbled rye, etc.

CHEESE: Who says you have to stick with just cheddar cheese? Try slices of Gouda, Jarlsberg, Mozzarella, Colby, Munster, etc. OR why not mix 2 cheeses together such as Cheddar and Munster.

TRY ADDING some of these ingredients in between the cheese slices, then grill it:

– 2 or 3 Chopped Sun Dried tomatoes (in oil or NOT in oil – you choose, both are good).

– 2 or 3 slices of “fresh” tomatoes (best when “in season”).

– A strip or 2 of cooked bacon strips (turkey bacon works well, too).

– Thin slices of fresh apple: goes particularly well with Cheddar cheese or Gouda

– Tuna Salad: Spread a thin layer of your favorite tuna salad in between two cheese slices such as Cheddar or Munster.

– Spread a thin layer of chopped marinated artichokes to a Mozzarella or Munster cheese sandwich.

– Spread a think layer of chopped marinated artichokes AND Sun Dried tomatoes to a Mozzarella or Munster cheese sandwich.

– Spread a thin layer of pesto and Sun Dried tomatoes between slices of Mozzarella cheese.

I hope this post gives you ideas of your own – ways to mix and match and elevate the basic grilled cheese sandwich. Pair it with an EZ Free-Style Soup (see our Food Category).
