Populuxe by Thomas Hine
A serious, yet whimsical and sentimental look at the 50’s and 60’s –THE POPULUXE ERA (populism, popularity and luxury). If you lived in this era, this book will most likely bring back wonderful memories that you may have forgotten. If you were born in the 50’s or 60’s and you want to revisit the fads, products, advertising and lifestyles that were part of your young life, this is the book for you!
It looks at American life in that time frame, covering everything from tailfin cars and TV dinners, to Barbie dolls and fallout shelters (hey, with things the way they are in the world today, maybe those were a good idea). It’s loaded with lots of pictures (color and black/white) of kitchens, furniture, designs, houses, fashion, cars, appliances – the list goes on and on.
This book is not only fun and entertaining, but it will give you a look at Americans and how their lives evolved by the products they bought and the lifestyles of the era. With the “great depression” behind them, things were looking up. People became more concerned about the model of the car they drove, the décor in their home, the clothes they wore – it was this era in tie when the phrase “keeping up with the Joneses” meant just that.
I dug deep in my “vault” for this one – this was published in the late 80’s – but it is my favorite book on the 50’s and 60’s when it comes to having it all! It’s still available online, so jump into this wonderful TIME MACHINE by way of this classic book on a classic age.
