Oldies Vault: Fun In The Summer Sun

June 21st:  The “official” first day of summer.  Step into the Oldies Vault for a list of favorite summer tunes from decades gone by.

I still like my summer getaway drives with a CD case packed with my favorite artists that evoke the sounds of summer fun.  Vacation trips wouldn’t be the same without at least one Beach Boys album.  My choice:  Beach Boys Sounds of Summer.  This album gives off Good Vibrations and plenty of Fun Fun Fun!  It also includes their later 1988 hit, Kokomo (the essence of summer daydreaming).

When cruising to the beach with my gal pals, Cyndi Lauper’s album She’s So Unusual  featuring Girls Just Want To Have Fun is always along for the ride.  The album is pure 80’s, pure classic and pure 100% Cyndi Lauper (as only Cyndi can be).  Even after all these years, her songs still appeal to both young and old — and everyone in between.  Not all 80’s albums can stand the “test of time” — but this one passes with flying colors — Time After Time.

There’s also something summery and comfy about Belinda Carlisle’s 80’s album Runaway Horses.  Maybe it’s her song Summer Rain that initially pulled me in, but the whole album is easy and breezy and puts me in a mellow, beachy mood.

In 1992 The Beach Boys gave us their single, Summer of Love, featured on the Bay Watch original TV series – a late release for them, but still sporting some great beach vibes.  And who doesn’t think about the sun-drenched beaches in Miami (not to mention designer clothing and fast cars) when they hear Jan Hammer’s Theme From Miami Vice?

In 2016 The Monkees made a subtle comeback.  Their album Good Times wasn’t a particularly great success, but it’s pop fun, still bouncy and reeking of their nostalgic sound.  The cut You Bring Me Summer is flavored with the good-old simple days and is just darn happy (and who doesn’t need “happy”?).

Time to step into the oldies vault with the 50’s smooth island sounds of Harry Belafonte, through the 60’s wild surf era when everyone was “catching a wave” (even if they didn’t own a surfboard) to 70’s laid back pop straight out of Margaritaville — all the way through those 80’s Endless Summer Nights.

Check them out on YouTube then load up your listening devices with your favorites from the past.  Pack up the car and head out for summer fun — because there ain’t no cure for those Summertime Blues!
