In Honor of Father’s Day
If you grew up in the 50’s or early 60’s, you most likely remember the Donna Reed Show with Carl Betz and Paul Petersen. Paul Petersen did a fine job playing the son, Jeff Stone. On one particular episode, Paul sang the song, My Dad which eventually helped him launch a singing career.
The words are beautiful and pay tribute to fathers everywhere. Here’s a few lyrics of this classic ode to dad:
He isn’t much in the eyes of the world; He’ll never make history.
No, he isn’t much in the eyes of the world, But he is the world to me.
My dad, now here is a man.
To me he is ev’rything strong; no he can’t do wrong, my dad.
My dad, now he understands when I bring him troubles to share;
Oh, he’s always there, my dad.
When I was small I felt ten feet tall.
When I walked by his side
And ev’ry one would say, “that’s his son,”
and my heart would burst with pride.
My dad, oh, I love him so,
And I only hope that some day my own son will say,
“My dad, now here is a man.”
The Wintons were an American 60’s funk and soul group out of Washington, D.C. In 1969 they released their hit song, Color Him Father. It’s an endearing and sentimental song — a boy professing his love of his stepfather. The boy’s dad was killed in the war and his mother was widowed with 7 children. His stepfather comes along and becomes their savior, their strength, their hope.
The song really reasonated with the public in 1969 – the height of the Vietnam War. Here are some of the lyrics:
…I love this man, I don’t know why
Jexcept I’ll need his strength till the day I die
My mother loves him and I can tell
By the way she looks at him when he holds my little sister Nell
I think I’ll color the man father
I think I’ll color him love
Said I’m gonna color him father
I think I’ll color the man love, yes I will
These songs are perfect for Father’s Day. If you’ve never heard these songs, check them out on YouTube, share them with your father or load them into your favorite listening devices. Whether you are a son or daughter, chances are you looked up to your dad for love and protection. Express your love and appreciation to your father on his special day, even though it may have to be via a phone call. If your father has gone with God, say a special prayer or share a memory in his honor.
To fathers everywhere — Happy Father’s Day!
To our own father — We miss you Dad!
