EZ CHRISTMAS DECORATING IDEAS

If you like the Christmas decorating ideas below, you may want to order them SOON. Everyone is putting the “pedal to the metal” as far as shopping online and even in stores.  Also don’t wait too long to hit your local craft stores and dollar stores.  Holiday items and decorations are fast tracking off the shelves.

NATIVITY SCENES:  As the saying goes, Jesus is the reason for the season, so what more appropriate way to honor the occasion than by making sure you have a beautiful Nativity Scene in your home.  The one above is very old, there’s no markings on it, but I’m guessing it’s from the early 50’s.  Our mother passed away six years ago, but our family Nativity Scene is still one of our most cherished possessions.  Every Christmas season it was always lovingly and prominently displayed.

If you don’t have a Nativity Scene in your home, this would be the perfect year to purchase one…one that you can keep throughout the years, and if you have children, it would be a wonderful gift to pass down to them.  The memories will last a lifetime.

EMBELLISH YOUR NATIVITY SCENE:  While most Nativity Scenes are ready to set up straight from the box, you can add some extra special touches.  Scatter bits of fake snow around it, add some artificial trees behind it and/or add a small strand of battery powered soft white fairy lights.  Fairy lights add a special glowing effect to the scene, especially on a deep winter night.

ADVENT CALENDARS:  Our family’s 1956 Advent Calendar was made in Germany.   It features an old-world German village snow scene.  Like our Nativity Scene, it’s a bit worn around the edges and has become very fragile, but it’s still both beautiful and sentimental.  Every year my brother, sister and I couldn’t wait for December 1st to open that very first window.  Along with our calendar, came a booklet of holiday verses to match each window.  To this day, it too, is one of our most cherished childhood possessions – and Christmas wouldn’t be the same without it.

Display your favorite Advent Calendar in a prominent place.  Make sure you have one that you feel is really extra special to pass down to your children or other family members or a friend.  If you have children, consider having one Advent Calendar in the main family room.  Then get each of your children their own children’s Advent Calendar that they can hang in their rooms (each child should have a different Calendar) – they’ll be excited to count down the days when they wake up each morning.  Will they peek at more than a window a day?  Probably, but who cares, they’ll love it and have fun!  It will be their own special Christmas present to kick off the season.

There are Advent Calendars out there for every individual’s style and taste.  Some have artwork that is absolutely breathtaking, some can be fun and frivolous, while others have graphics with a modern or European flair.  The important thing is to choose one that has an image you’ll never tire of.

ADVENT CALENDARS AS GIFTS:  Especially with Covid still squelching many holiday get-togethers, consider sending off an Advent Calendar.  Most are flat and EASILY MAILABLE.  Every time the recipient opens a window, they will think of you.  If you do send one as a gift, best to order it and send it off right away  – Window #1 needs to open on December 1st  and that’s right around the corner.  Good news:  If ordering online, you can have it sent right to the recipient – no need to go to the post office.

Nativity Scenes and Advent Calendars are both easy and meaningful Christmas decorations (and make great gifts), but are often overlooked.  Make sure yours are displayed in a prominent place with perhaps some special added touches.
