Booze and Vinyl – Andre & Tenaya Darlington
No respectable rocker or music lover born between the 50’s and the 80’s should be without this book! Whether you enjoy a solitary cocktail with music at the end of the day, are hosting a low key social gathering or blowing it out in full party mode – this is simply a “must have” for your coffee table or bar.
Its chocked full of 70 groundbreaking albums from the 1930’s through the 2000’s. The authors break down the book by music categories: Rock, Dance, Chill and Seduce. Each classic album has an introductory background (i.e., what made this album “great”). Each album is paired with two drinks: one for Side A and one for Side B, reminiscent of its music. There’s even a few appropriate snack and food recipes tossed in for those who want to “drop the needle on the record” when entertaining friends or hosting a nostalgic vinyl party.
The books opens with the Rolling Stone’s Sticky Fingers, but here’s a sample of some of the other best artists of all time featured in this serious blast from the past with libations to boot: Led Zeppelin, The Beastie Boys, Queen, The Doors, Guns N’ Roses, James Brown, Prince, Talking Heads, Blondie, Robert Johnson, The Beatles, The Velvet Underground, Vampire Weekend, Aretha Franklin, Snoop Dogg, David Bowie, Frank Sinatra, Miles Davis, Carole King, Run DMC, Hank Williams, Elvis, etc., etc.!
I love everything about this book. It’s an easy read and loaded with rock and music facts. It’s extremely well-written with a touch of humor to boot! For the James Brown Night Train Cocktail, the authors warn: …this drink will have you waking up in another city with no pants and your wallet gone. Yup – James Brown was high energy and worked it — so does this cocktail!
The format and graphics are particularly stellar – I can’t help but smile as page after page is loaded down with cocktails paired with turntables, vinyl and other vintage images. Take a “good” look at the cover – at first glance, it looks like a striped background, but it’s a shelf of album covers!
The drinks and recipes are all easy and the entire book will take you on a smooth, effortless trip down Memory Lane.
Hardbound and printed on high quality paper, it measures 8” x 8 ½” (not too big, not too small) with over 200 pages of just plain good stuff when it comes to booze and vinyl. I can only imagine the fun Andre´and Tenaya Darlington had doing the research on this book. It’s quite apparent they personally tested out each and every drink!
I got this book as a birthday present, but don’t wait for Santa to put it in your stocking – grab a copy of this book for yourself….two or three copies if you have rockin’ music friends. It’s a great way to give the gift of music and happy hour all rolled into one!
