It’s just after Labor Day weekend at Mackinac Island, Michigan. Allie McMurphy, owner of the McMurphy Hotel and Fudge Shop, thought with the tourist season winding down, she’d have a bit of a break. Wrong (on every level)!
Nothing like a Hollywood producer coming to this cozy little island to create a real town “buzz.” Apparently there’s going to be a TV mystery series pilot shot in their town and Dirk Benjamin, a Hollywood hunk, is going to going to play the lead.
Allie’s already got her hands full with her ex-boyfriend, Trent, showing up in town just as she’s starting to get a bit serious with local law enforcement officer, Rex. Then she suddenly finds herself being photographed with hottie Dirk Benjamin as he promotes his new series (and himself).
As if things aren’t complicated enough, she gets sucked into a real life murder mystery. There’s killer or killers knocking off men at Mackinac and leaving a chess move clue with every corpse. Seems over the years Allie has earned the reputation of amateur sleuth. Apparently her dog, Mal, is a sleuth too, and Mal, sure knows how to sniff out dead bodies!
As the killer strikes repeatedly, it’s apparent he’s playing a sinister chess game with Allie. If she doesn’t win his twisted little game soon, the body count will continue. There are plenty of suspects including the film crew, but the motive behind these crimes remains to be seen and for you to figure out!
Nancy Coco paints us a pretty picture of this charming island setting where the main mode of transportation is a horse-drawn vehicle. She also gives us a delicious mystery complete with doses of her home-made fudge. I’m not a fudge fan myself, but I can tell you that I’ve been having a hankering for fudge ever since I picked up this book!
Watch for this new release in the Candy Coated Mystery Series coming out soon in September — a perfect read to wrap up your summer!
