With summer just around the corner, Lucy Burdette’s Killer Takeout is the perfect cozy mystery to get your summer reading on!
It may be October in Key West, but it’s still over ninety degrees and things just keep getting hotter on the island…and not just per the thermostat. This delightful series captures the essence of island life and features, Haley, the local and lovable amateur sleuth. Haley lives on a houseboat with her feisty eighty plus shipmate, Miss Gloria, and their two cats. It’s an interesting arrangement given their age difference, but their lifestyle alone makes for a great setting. Add to it Haley’s “real” job as a food critic and writer for Key Zest Magazine and you’ve got a winner.
Her office is buzzing with too much to do, especially with the island’s yearly Fantasy Fest coming up fast. Fantasy Fest is a huge tourist draw and this year’s Fantasy Fest Queen’s competition is designed to help raise money for AIDS projects. Her friend and officemate, Danielle, is even more crazy busy than usual, but more than happy to sign on for the Queen competition to help raise money for this worthy cause.
As the competition heats up, Danielle finds herself in water that’s hotter than the local crab boil. When a Fantasy Fest zombie turns up “for real” dead, police department eyes focus on Danielle. As you can imagine, this doesn’t sit well with Haley, and the fact that her latest romance is with Bransford from their local police department, puts her between a rock and a hard place.
Question: What’s a gal to do? Answer: Keep eating the savory and scrumptious island food then write fabulously detailed food reviews as you try to uncover motive and leads to this island mystery.
Yeah, I’m a self-proclaimed foodie and this book kept me hungry! The vivid details of her plates of food made me hanker for a fish taco at midnight! The characters are charming and lovable. I felt like I personally knew her mom and her mom’s “soon to be” husband, Sam. Plus you get a real feel for beach life (complete with murder) AND oh no – there’s an impending hurricane to help add to the suspense!
So go ahead, kick off your summer reading with Killer Takeout – and bring on the island food and drinks to go with it – make Jimmy Buffet proud – get ready to be on island time.
