I’m a big believer in that phrase: “Feather your nest.” Your home is your castle, your haven, your comfort zone. For those reasons alone, it’s important to make it a happy, comfy place. But today I’m going to focus on the bedroom.
Why the bedroom? Think about this: Your bedroom is the last place you see before you fall asleep and it’s the first place you see when you wake up to a brand new day. That makes it extra special.
In these deep, dark chilly northeastern winter months, there’s nothing I like better than snuggling in bed under my comforter with a good cozy mystery in hand, hot coco on the nightstand and a cat perched on my lap. I think to myself: It just doesn’t get any better than this!
The last things I see before I fall asleep and the first things I see when I wake up, are photos on my dresser of my family and my favorite deco pictures hanging on the walls…they make me smile and bring me peace. The sheets are warm and comfy flannel, the comforter is soft and squishy – my 5 pillows ranging in soft to firm, all make going to bed extra special.
You don’t have to break the bank to make your bedroom cozy and special. You spend approximately one-third of your life in your bedroom sleeping. What better way to start your day off right then by waking up feeling refreshed and surrounded by things that will put a smile on your face.
HERE’S A FEW TIPS:
Invest in good pillows: Good pillows don’t cost that much – but they can “cost” you a good night’s sleep. If you can’t remember when you replaced your pillows then it’s probably overdue. You may not even realize that your lousy pillow is not allowing you to get a good night’s sleep.
Quality sheets and bedding: If your sheets are flimsy and scratchy they may be preventing you from a good night’s sleep. If your home is a bit chilly or drafty in winter and spring, consider buying flannel sheets for those seasons. Give thought to buying sheets in your favorite colors or soothing or fun patterns — same with the comforter or bedspread. If you have a deep mattress, always be sure to check the fitted sheet dimensions before buying, not all of them will fit.
Display Photos of friends, loved ones or special times that make you happy. Put them on a nightstand or dresser where you see them before you fall asleep and to greet you when you wake up.
Hang Pictures of your favorite paintings or pictures in your bedroom to admire before you shove off to la-la land.
Serving Tray: Add a serving tray to hold your morning coffee or evening tea.
Fresh Greens or Flowers in a small wall or bud vase will give your nest a dash of nature and fresh color. Even in winter I have a small wall vase filled with sprigs of evergreen spruce and bright red holly berries from my yard.
Mattress: If you mattress is old and needs replacing, consider a mattress with a remote that can raise your upper body. These are extremely wonderful if you love reading or watching TV in bed. Also, if you have acid reflux, elevating your upper body while sleeping will help give you relief.
Curtains can really give your room a warm feeling, as well as keeping out the light and cold air (think insulated panels). Go with curtains with grommets (large round holes in the top of the panel) – the grommets allow you to just pull them open and pull them shut, no cords to tangle or mess with – super easy.
Paint: Painting a room is one of the least expensive things you can do to give it a fresh new look on a budget. Choose your favorite color. If the room is small, go with a light pastel of your favorite color or a neutral color. Then coordinate some new bedding or curtains to tie it all together.
REMEMBER: These days there are always sales and bargains to be had. Watch for sales and clearances to spruce up your bedroom on a budget and make it your happy, comfy place. If you climb into bed, snuggle up and smile as you look around, you’ve done a great job “feathering your nest!”
Pinzon Flannel Sheets by Amazon: From late fall through early spring, I simply MUST have flannel sheets on my bed. The house is old and gets damp and downright chilly – flannel takes care of the problem (if you don’t believe me, ask the cats).
I ordered these Pinzon Sheets with an Amazon Gift Card a friend gave me for Christmas. With my new mattress, a lot of sheets were just not deep enough to fit it (always check dimensions before buying). These sheets fit my deep mattress perfectly. They wash well and are soft and cozy. I ordered the 170 gram weight which was perfect: not too heavy, not too light. The floral grey design is classic and soothing.
RL (Ralph Lauren) Sheets: For regular cotton sheets, I’ve gotten hooked on RL (Ralph Lauren). These are high quality cotton sheets that stay “crisp” which I especially like during the hot summer months. I love the flurry of wonderful patterns available as well as solid colors.
