Chocked full of colorful hometown characters, Donna Andrews always knows how to get us hooked on her books from the Meg Langslow mystery series. The first mystery I read by Donna was A Murder Most Hatched. Within the first few pages she had me not only totally “hooked,” but smiling all the way through to the very end. Another fine example of an author whose books you just can’t put down! Her Lord of the Wings is a perfect fun read to get yourself into the cozy mystery Halloween spirit and pairs perfectly with hot apple cider (perhaps with a tad of rum) on a chilly night.
The witchy season is just starting to ramp up in Meg’s quaint town of Caerphilly. In an effort to increase tourism and revenue, the entire town is throwing a major Halloween festival. Everyone is decked out in their finest costumes – so many ghosts, witches, zombies and vampires that even Bela Lugosi would be jealous!
Meg’s in charge of the Goblin Patrol – the volunteer security force who makes sure nothing gets out of hand or goes awry during the festival. There’s no shortage of fabulous Halloween fun at the food tents, the Creatures of the Night Exhibit, haunted house and other spook-filled events all successfully drawing hundreds of people to their town. Unfortunately, it also draws in a secretive group of folks bent on winning a very sinister scavenger hunt.
There’s a lot more brewing than a witch’s caldron when the head organizer of the festival goes missing. To make matters worse, Dr. Smoot, the proprietor of the Haunted House/Caerphilly museum gets whacked on the head, has his establishment set on fire, and winds up in a coma. Then there’s also that pesky dead body they found in the woods outside of town.
Thankfully the reality of murder and mayhem hasn’t scared away the tourists and the town wants to keep it that way. As the list of suspects continues to grow, Meg, with the help of her relatives and the local police try to solve this devious crime. Was the murder tied to the nefarious scavenger hunt or one of the items in the Caerphilly Museum – or something else altogether?
